This week's cartoon is revisiting a local issue. A couple of weeks ago I did one about the Lancaster, PA train station currently being "renovated" but after spending many $$$ and many, many hours it was discovered that the only thing being renovated was the Amtrak offices, the roof and the parking lot. Much to the dismay of our mayor and the entire train commuting population.

This week some early bird commuters arrived at the station to find it locked and dark with only minutes before the first train was to arrive. The commuters broke in and made their way to the platform. Amtrak's response was that it was a mere "scheduling error."

ToonSeum visit

I had the great fortune last Saturday to be in Pittsburgh and along with visiting my favorite designer (and daughter) managed to finally get to the ToonSeum. It is a wonderful, tiny, gem of a museum dedicated to the cartoon arts, both stationary and animated.

The show that was up on the walls was a collection of Looney Tunes art. Character sheets, story boards, music scores, and cells of characters and backgrounds. Wonderful stuff from Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson, Sam Nicholson, Maurice Noble and recordings of the immortal, Mel Blanc.

I wish that I had more than my iPhone camera to record the visit. Sorry for the poor quality.

A very cool aspect of the show is that it was sponsored by the Acme Brick Company!

Train Station woes.

A little late this week. This past Sunday's cartoon: a local issue. Our aging train station here in Lancaster finally got going on its renovation a year and a half ago. As the project is winding down the mayor toured it and discovered they aren't planning to use any of the money to renovate the lobby! It is still sporting peeling paint, cracks, no air conditioning, and priceless woodwork that is in critical need of repair.

Oh yeah, did I mention that all of the Amtrak offices did get air conditioning and renovations?

Parents of prospective art college students often ask me: "What kind of jobs are there for illustrators?" I then proceed to tell them that almost all illustrators are "freelancers" and that we work out of our studios, usually found in our homes. I then get the hard stare of the protective mama and papa bear who fear for their cub and his or her future without a biweekly paycheck, health benefits, and the possibility that said cub may never leave the den. I would always advise them that although it is not the life for everyone, it is the life for a certain few of us and that it can be very rewarding.

When I started freelancing in 1989, I was in a distinct minority. Over the years with all of the ups and downs of the economy more people have joined the ranks. The "Gig Economy" Sara Horowitz describes in this first of a series of articles from The Atlantic, on the rise of the freelancer in our workplace. I don't know what it portends for our economy's future but at least it is nice to know we freelance illustrators are not alone anymore.

Sara Horowitz is the founder of Freelancers Union, an advocacy group for independent workers like me.

Yesterday's cartoon. For people who aren't living in Pennsylvania, this one concerns our new Governor's announcement of his new budget last week. The budget calls for drastic cuts for everyone and no state tax increases. Curiously, still doesn't impose any taxes on the gas companies exploring and finding natural gas in the shale "under our feet." These companies are poised to make lots of money while they use and abuse our resources and roads.

As an educator who went to college in a time before the internet, laptops, and wi-fi, and as a fan of technology and the many benefits it provides, the rise in incidents of plagiarism is something I find fascinating and disturbing. This is yet another article on the subject by Trip Gabriel of the New York Times. I had a college professor who lectured us on the subconscious decisions we make when we get dressed in the morning and what they say about our personality. Why do you pull just one shirt collar out of your sweater neck? What are you trying to say about yourself when you do that?

Norman Rockwell, America Illustrated- Great article for the 4th of July

The New York Times had a great article on July 4th about the new show of Rockwell art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Many of the original paintings in the show are from the personal collections of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. I find it wonderful that the two film makers who gave us such totally American masterpieces, "American Graffiti," "Saving Private Ryan," are collectors of Rockwell's work.

I love drawing cars. The sketch of the couple crammed into the mini car became an editorial cartoon when Fiat decided to by Chrysler last year. My first car was a fun, ultra small, 1966 Fiat and I love the designs of new Fiats. I thought it would be funny to picture an average, super sized American couple trying to squeeze into a Fiat.

Fallingwater

We traveled to Pittsburgh again this week and managed to veer off course through the rolling hills of Western PA. We've been wanting to see Frank Lloyd Wright's, Fallingwater for a long time and we finally found the time to see it. What a treasure. It is fun to imagine what it must have been like for the Kaufmann family to be there, back in the 40's having house guests like Diego Rivera, Freida Kahlo, Albert Einstein and later, Andy Warhol. If you get the opportunity, go there, you won't regret it.

Giant walking the streets of Manhattan

I was in Manhattan this week for the Surtex and National Stationery shows. A wonderful day that overwhelmed my senses. In typical New York fashion, the gods conspired to give me one more image as I walked back to Penn Station and my train ride home.

On 7th Avenue I noticed a crowd of people at the end of the block. They surrounded a man that looked way too big to be real. As I got up to the crowd, I realized that he was huge. Probably 7 and a half feet tall. The man standing next to him here is well over 6 feet tall. It felt like I had stumbled into a movie. With one look at the large man's face, you could read a thousand different emotions. He seemed to be okay with the attention but incredibly sad that he would never be like the rest of the people on the street.
